I love reading and this book intrigued and inspired me from the very start. Seth Godin's endorsement on the front didn't hurt either: "Ignore this book at your own peril." The book starts with a chapter titled: "The new reality." The authors start off by explaining that this is different kind of business book for different kinds of people. I like that! To abbreviate (or if you want to read the whole page, buy the book at Amazon…look at page 9) This books is for:
- "Those who have never dreamed of starting a business to those who already have a successful company…"
- Type-A go-getters, the hard-core entrepreneurs
- Less intense small-business owners
- People stuck in jobs who dream about doing their own thing
- And..even for those who have never considered starting a business for whatever reason. Time, money, convictions, fears..
The authors, Fried and Hansson go on to say:
"There's a new reality. Today anyone can be in business…Technology that cost thousands is now just a few bucks or free…Stuff that was impossible just a few years ago is simple today."
And here's the part that really stuck with me, because it's so applicable to our business.
"You don't have to work miserable 60/80/100-hour weeks to make it work. 10-40 hours a week is plenty. You don't have to deplete your life savings or take on a boatload of risk. Starting a business on the side while keeping your day job can provide all the cash flow you need. You don't even need an office. Today you can work from home or collaborate with people you've never met who live thousands of miles away.
It's time to rework work. Let's get started."
See, I love that. Because Dave and I aren't Type-A, high energy, confident go-getters. We fell more in the "stuck in a job, dreamed of bigger things, but were afraid we wouldn't succeed…" bracket. We didn't have any money to invest in starting a business. We didn't have any extra money, period. And yet in less than 4 years, we have a completely new future, doing something we love and helping other people while we help ourselves. Even though we just wanted to earn some extra grocery money, we earned so much my husband quit his job that kept him away from home 5-6 days a week. And we did it with little to invest..time or money. Four years ago I would get sick to my stomach trying to balance all the bills. This year we paid for a brand new 2-stall garage in full. One check. You can change your life if you are willing.
In day to day life, I'm in week 7 and lost 5.5 pounds so far. The first 6 weeks the scale didn't budge. But that's similar to the first time I did P90X and by the 90th day, the weight was coming off too fast. All I know is my clothes finally getting looser! Even my jeans..
We've also been really busy getting the outside ready for the landscaper to come put in a sprinkler system and fix our yard after all the construction! I can't wait for it all to be done!
Have a great weekend!
