Many people have asked me over the last 12 years how I was able to get starting losing the weight from three 70 pound pregnancies. I had never been terribly overweight in high school or college, but I also had never been in good physical shape. I wasn't into athletics in high school, although there is the 3 pointer I made in 7th grade basketball that was a complete fluke, but also was the pinnacle of my 7th grade sports experiment. I was the A+ student, interested in academics, music and art. I took French horn, violin and piano lessons. I wanted to try out for track, but it seemed that everyone kind of looked miserable when they were out running for the first time in the spring. So, I didn't do sport. My first year of college, I got sick so easily that I almost had to quit singing in a small traveling group I was in. I just wasn't that healthy, even though I kept my shape at about an average size 12, increasing slightly during the long winter months!
So fast forward. Someone asked, well, how did you do it? Here's how. After having 3 babies; 16 months after the last one in fact, Dave was feeling out of shape and asked me to order "for him" this workout program called Power 90. (Reader, this is not P90X. Some people have totally forgotten about Power 90 that started that whole thing.) I argued with Dave about this purchase. We didn't have the $50 to buy some workout dvd that would never get used. I was a super supportive wife, you can tell. But eventually, Dave convinced me and we bought it in December when Dave had a few more hours at FedEx.
It came in the mail. I opened it up and read the brochure that came with it. This was long before Beachbody started putting in all these manuals and menus. It basically had a brochure that suggested some healthy habits for better results. And a "ladder" of foods that would help you make better choices. I didn't think about carbs or protein. I just chose baked chicken over fried. Oops, I'm getting ahead of myself.

Well, I was curious and even though I had no intentions of using this "internet" purchase, I knew exercise was good for me, even if I could never lose the pregnancy weight. So I did one of the workouts before wrapping it for Dave's Christmas present. I could 2 pushups on my knees at one time. Two! Does that give you any idea how out of shape I was? I thought I was strong carrying babies around all day, doing laundry and picking up toys!
So, after Christmas, I decided I was going to try this thing and committed to 90 days. Kind of, "let's just see if this is real." I got in 3 days the first week and 4 days the next. My boys were little, and I made all kinds of excuses. I wasn't really committed yet. At the end of 2 weeks, I measured my waist and it was smaller by 2". Pardon me? I had never lost inches eating dry salads and cutting calories. Maybe because I couldn't keep that up long.
Long story shorter, after 90-120 days, I was down from a generous size 16+ to a 6. Later that summer a very fit, size 4. All with the original Power 90.
And it still works. We have tons of really neat and cool new workout programs like Turbo Fire, Les Mills Combat and Les Mills Pump, Tai Cheng and P90X2. But the fact remains. Even though this program is older and doesn't have a fancy set, and Tony is wearing short blue shorts, it still works. Guaranteed.
So that's how I got started. And after about 3 years of using Power 90 off and on to maintain my fitness, I ventured on to P90X. And the rest is history!
Thanks for reading. If I can do this, you can. I just improved some habits and little by little, transformed my body.
In this together!
